is really fast when we run around the outside of the arena turning the corners. i was thinking he would be a good barrel horse. how should i start training him? i also dont have a trainer. would that make it hard to make him into a barrel racing horse? before u ask he is 8 years old. his former owner didnt do much with him at all. (she might have come down to the barn maybe 1 time every 2 months or so) she also didnt know how to ride. so i am basically starting over with him. what should i do to train him myself? do i NEED a trainer to compete???

  1. Yep..Yep. You do ,,

It seems you moght have found a nice horse and if you think he has talent !!

Then take him and you to a pro trainer in reining NOT BARRELS ,

Only because any horse can turn sharp ,, but the rest is hard ,, So yes find some one that has experieance in western riding

get your set right and under stand the basics of ridding , and using your leg and BALANCE ,,

I am happy to ask or answers questions like yours,

That  they ask first , then trying to do it alone ,,

If you find a trainer in cutting or reining they can help you soooo much with you in barrels...

as you said he has speed ,, Now Its up to you to use that speed in a right way !!!!

YEA YOU might have a partner and keep learning ,, Not from fellow barrel racers But from a reining horse trainer ,, USE YOUR LEGS AND GET PERFECT BALANCE,, AND SEAT

I will see you in the next N.F.R,, WINING IF you do as i say !!

    GOOD LUCK , Good question

You must have a good eye,

to pick up a diamond in the rough !

  2. my horse never barrel raced either before me but my grandpa got my the state champion to train me cause i had no clue at the time but it was cool and now i love it...i dont think u need a trainer i think u can do it urself

  3. trainer would be best, BUT not a must. trainers are expensive...if you want to try to do this yourself then get a barrel and start on getting him to flex around the barrel, once he gets that down then set up the cloverleaf and teach him the pattern. the biggest thing is not to let him get bored with the training...change things up, keep things fun....if you are having fun then chances are so is he

the local girl here that has won lots of playdays and rodeos, her horse has never been to a trainer....she broke and trained her horse herself.

it also depends on what you want to compete in...local playdays and rodeos or PRCA...if your wanting to do this professionally then be ready to spend thousands of dollars on trainers

  4. Since you are asking questions, it would probably make better sense to invest some time and a few dollars in a barrel racing specialist and or trainer.  Most would rather start with younger stock.  Occasionally there are older re trainable barrel racers.  Time and practice are the key to success.

  5. yes get a trainer to help you ,,
