  1. And as we speak, the IRS website has been updated to say please allow 12-16 weeks, but the internal revenue manual still says 12 and do a referral.  If you get a CSR who hasn't heard about the delay....

Well at least with the overtime, the offer is to give more work resources to the actual work instead of answering the phone calls.  But, after 7 months of overtime, not every CSR is chomping at the bit to work even more of it.

I truly hope that the IRS outlines to Congress why there are so many delays.  Even before the rebate, the last minute code changes in December were causing this year to be a heavy 1040X year.  Even though it's July, it's going to be tough for the IRS to get the forms updated for the changes passed into law today!

  2. People are receiving refunds from amended returns all the time. The problem is that there is a huge volume of amended and duplicate returns to sort through this year, many of them due to the stimulus payments. As we speak, IRS phone representatives are being trained to process amended returns and being offered overtime to do so.

  3. Yes one of our clients e-filed their return on 3/3/08 and it got sent to the review department and they paper filed an amended return around March 21st.  They received both their refund and their rebate sometime last month.

It sounds like you paper filed your return.  Normal processing time is 8-12 weeks.  This year it is running 12-20 weeks - and this would be from the date you filed your amended, not from the original filing date.

And yes - different IRS employees will give you different answers - it can be quite annoying at times.  One rule some people use on important issues is: Call three times.  Get their name and ID number each time.  If you get the same answer all three times, then you can trust the information...

  4. At this time IRS is taking up to 16 weeks to process the amended tax return; due to the high volume of tax returns filed this year due to the stimulus.  IRS was over whelmed with the volume and taking longer to get to the Amended returns. be patient.

By the way anytime you call IRS and get good customer service you can take the CSR ID number and send IRS a note include the ID number and the employee will get a good mark for their yearly evaluation.
