My "Lucky Bamboo" is developing white patches on the leaves... What do i do to treat this?

I have a "lucky bamboo" plant in my house for nearly 5 months. It hasn't really grown vertically although it does tend to sprout leaves to the sides. It's potted in a water medium, not soil.

The real problem is that i recently noticed white patches on most of the leaves. I tried to wash it off, but i recurs. Its sort of like salt sedimentation on the leaves, but i am not sure of what it really is. Plus, i see that some leaf tips are withered and dying.

What do you think it is? What do you suggest i do to remedy this situation? And do you have any tips on how to take care of lucky bamboo properly and to help the grow taller?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks...
