My rabbit's fur is changing colour - why is this and should I be worried?

She is usually jet black with white speckles on her back, but recently she has been getting reddish brown patches. It can't be age, because she is only about 3, and I don't think it can be the weather. She is an outdoor rabbit, but so is my other rabbit and he's still black with no brown patches :/

lately she has lost a bit of weight, but she seems healthy enough. Bright eyes, clean ears, shiny coat etc. She has a good diet, she just hasn't been eating quite so much.

She has had three litters of babies if that helps. (please don't lecture me about neutering, because I got the male neutered as soon as I possibly could. She came to me pregnant and already having had one litter, and then AFTER I got him neutered he somehow managed to get her pregnant again?! anyway, not my fault, don't lecture me)

so.... should i be worried? what do i do?

  1. no u shouldnt be worried its just what they do but you must have a jack rabbit because they do change colors

  2. It sounds like sunburn to me. Does her cage get a lot of sun during the lay? Does she lie to lay in the sun in the afternoon?

Black rabbits that are housed outside in the summer will often get "sunburn" on their coats. It's basically just that the sunlight bleaches the black fur, turning it a reddish brown.

When she molts her summer coat for her winter coat, the dark black should come back in.

  3. its nothing to worry about, i have the same problem with my rabbit he's supposed to be a jet black and white dutch, but now he's getting sandy yellow tips on all of his jet black coat. i think its something to do with sun bleaching his coat, could be with yours too.

  4. well when my puppy got older her fur changed from very very dark brown to a very light brown color. almost blond. i wouldn't be worried. is he's getting older then his fur might be going gray that's what happened to my older dog.

  5. it might be because she is a girl some species do that. research her breed

im sure its not a big deal

  6. because summer is ending. my dogs & rabbits to that. it is going to become fall and then winter. so they have to grow their winter coat!

  7. yes

  8. if your 2 rabbits are the same breed or kind of rabbit the only thing that would change the color is age. They are like siamese (spelled right?) cats. As they get older their colors change. Another thing that could possibly changer her color is the seasons. If you live by me (NJ) it is about to turn to fall. Most rabbits change their colors during season changes. Hope i helped!

  9. no don't worry hes just g*y
