Question:

My rabbit ate a maggot, what should I do?!?

I just noticed there are maggots in the box of raisins from which I fairly regularly give my rabbit (and her 5 month-old babies) a treat. I don't know if she has consumed a maggot, but should I go to the vet as a precaution? What will happen/what are the symptoms if she or one of the babies have eaten one?

  1. I don't think she would try and eat it, and she would probably be fine even if she accidentally did. You can always call the vet (as long as they are very knowledgeable about rabbits) and ask them about it. Chances are they will just tell you to observe her and the others, but there's no harm in just calling (and that should be free).

By the way, 5 months old is when rabbits become mature (4-6 months depending on the rabbit), so if you still have the "babies" in with the mother, any males you have can mate with their mother or their sisters. They should probably be separated at least into male and female groups anyway, as they will become territorial soon (if not already) and may fight. If you did not know/haven't already, of course.

  2. she probably ok.

    call a vet.

  3. A rabbit likes its grub.

You don't have anything to worry about. Its not going to die. When it does, the maggots get their revenge anyway.

    (Get some new raisins)

I just realised.....didnt I eat one of your raisin cakes?

  4. She's probably OK.  If she ate it, it's dead so it's not like it's going to feed off of her insides.

  5.   eat the rabbit

  6. No worries. Your bunny will be fine.
