My rabbit seems sick? Please help?

I've had my bunny for about 7 years or so...and he seems sick. He's had some health problems of a sort we're not sure about before, but now his eye seems sick. His eyelid on the right side is slightly puffy and red, and there's eye fluids ("goop") around the area. The fur just directly around his eye seems wet, or almost like human hair would look after being sprayed with hairspray (obviously it's not). Also, unimportantly, his nails need to be trimmed (if that affects anything). Please help, because I don't know much about animals, so I don't really know what's going on! Thanks!

Has pepper had his eye infection shots? Bunnys have a tendency to get a lot of infenctions. You definitly need to take it to a vet.

Bunny's runny eyes need to be diagnosed by a veterinarian because bacterial infection is one of the most potentially dangerous causes. For rabbits with eye discharge. my firends bunny had the same thing and she had to put antibiotic eye drops the whole life of the bunny. hope everything works out.

Is he still eating and drinking normally? That's so important to keep an eye on in these guys. Is it just one eye? It sounds like he 'may' have an eye infection which obviously requires the use of antibiotics to help heal. All in all, he should be seen by your veterinarian (ensure that he has experience in rabbits) to rule out other problems such as pasteurella, glaucoma or an obstruction of the lacrimal duct which would cause the excessive 'goop' around the eye.

Is the affected eye open or closed? When you say that his nails have to be trimmed, I worry about trauma to the eye like an ulcer or something. In this case the eye is very teary and painful, usually the animal keeps the eye shut or is wincing (but not all the time). In this case, because it is so painful and involves eyesight, it is an emergency and should be seen as soon as possible.

Take him to a vet.  He sounds like he has an eye infection, possibly resulting from a blockage in his Nasolacrimal duct (tear duct that drains excess fluids away from the eye).  The vet will try to flush it to make sure it is not blocked, and give you an antibiotic to put in his eye that will clear up the infection.  If it is blocked, and they can't un-block it, you will need to clean the area around the eye each and every day the rest of his life, and the vet may give you eye drops to use after the infection is gone to help keep irritation down.  Good luck!
