Who said it was the rack- and- pinion box at fault? Are you just assuming this? You might check out everything else as well! Has anyone done work on the box or steering lately?

Have that checked,  nothing like having it catch in the middle of a turn and causing an accident.

Your car is unroadworthy and should be off the road until it is fixed.

If the rack and pinion is bad then yes it can be very dangerous to the point that your steering that lock up....
