My rafters are at 14 in but the whole to cut says 17 in. do i have to cut the rafters? or place the fan over .

Does the fan just sit over the rafters? Please help!!

  1. Cut the biggest hole that you can without cutting the rafters.  You might have to cut a rectangular or oval hole instead of a circular one.  Don't cut the rafters.

As Wolf said, DON'T cut the rafter.  You can, if you need to, cut a hole that crosses a rafter.  The concern I would have, as a carpenter, is how to attach the fan to the roof.  It might be best if you have the fan actually nailed to 2 rafters, and cut out the 14-1/2" between them  This would seat the fan more firmly.  Hope this helps.
