My rat has peeled dry cracked feet what should i do? :'(?

my rat has thick peices of skin coming off of his hind feet and they are cracked. his foot hair is peeling off with the skin and its all red underneath. what could this be caused from? it looks really sore :( and im worried. can i put anything on them like any natural products paw paw ointment etc? he is seeing the vet about respiratory problems already, but i only just noticed his feet a few days ago.

I think that you should see the vet about that too so maybe they can give him medicine for it. i hope your rat gets better soon because i would be sad if that happened to one of mine

This is a nutritional problem and he doesn't get any sun exposure, right ?

You can't keep a mammal inside and feed them cheap food and expect for them to thrive...

Please do a little research, find a higher quality food, and take him outside at least once a day to "soak up" some rays...

Without vit. d (from natural sunlight), he can't process all the nutrients in his food...

There is a cream called F10 which should be available from your vet.  It is very good for treating dry skin on rats feet.  Also it is a good idea to line the base of the cage with a few layers of newspaper under the usual bedding to `cushion` the hardness of the cage floor.

While your at the vet, ask the vet to check his feet as well.

Try polysporin, it might work, might not .. but i'm positive it will NOT harm the rat.

Is it at the heel of the foot? It could be bumblefoot.

Baby oil or Vaseline will work. If he is on a wire bottom cage is may be sore hocks like a rabbit gets. Give him something soft to walk on and keep his feet oiled. If it looks infected put his foot in a pill bottle with peroxide in it to soak his foot while you hold him. Good luck
