My rat hates me?

Hi,

I bought a rat the other week and my mistake was i did not buy 2 but tracey seemed okay abit glum so i went out and about another. The other rat Emin Who seems to be abit older and alot fatter is much more use to people and when i get her out she is happy to sit on my shoulder without running off or trying to explore like Indiana jones. Tracey on the other hand gets really arctic and stars to claw herself away from me she will not stay calm and just gets more and more worked up so i have to end up putting her back in the cage and leaving her there while emin is still out. they both seem to be getting on but they do have tendency to try and escape all the time. What should i do ? and why do they keep clawing up the corners of there cage as if they dont want to be here.. its kinda hurt full lol x

How big is the cage, firstly? The minimum size for 2 rats is 2ft(l) x 1ft(w) x 1.5ft(h).

Do they have toys? Rats really appreciate toys!

Your nervous rat proberly just needs more time and handling. Handle her as much as posible and she'll calm down soon.

rats like all animals are not mean t to sit in a cage all day she is not use to you probablycuz u dont hold her very often she may also be pregnant..

Your rat does this to you not because she hates you but because she might not trust you yet. Debbie the rat lady has a great and imformative article about this on her website. Its www.ratfanclub.com. When you get to the home page look on the left hand side and go to rat info. Scroll all the way down till you get to behavior and click on trust training for frightend rats. This really works. Well if it is a new rat it will warm up to you in time my rats were very scared of me when i first got them but now they are kind and loving. Try to play with Tracey without having Ermin out so that she can have more attention and even if she does try to run away you will still be able to get her without having another rat around to worry about. Young rats tend to want to explore more then older ones so it is normal for her to want to run around and play. My rats are just coming out of this very playful stage and are now more calm but they still like to play a little.

Shes doesn't sound used to people, give her lots of treats, handling,etc and she will eventually get used to you.
