I have a rat who appears to be getting a cataract in one of his eyes. He's still very young so could there be some underlying cause that we'd need to get treated? I know the cataract itself won't be too bad for him (he's a red-eyed rat) but if something else could be wrong, I'd like to fix it.

Our other rat just had an abscess removed a week ago if that is relevant at all. They were separated for the past week and were very sad without each other.

  1. It could be an ulcer on his eye that could be easily treated with drops. Maybe he scratched it on something and it is getting infected. I would take it into your vet and have it checked just to be sure.

  2. An abcess has little to do with other health issues. Surgery to get a cataract removed would be much more risky than what its worth. Rats don't see well anyway. I don't think there is anything a vet can do if the cataract has something to do with a brain issues. Therefore, assuming the rat is otherwise healthy, your best option is to do nothing at this time.

  3. id say get him to a vet and let them took at it cuz lots of ppl danno here
