My rat is making a weird noise. It only happens every once in a while, but it's starting to become more frequent. I wouldn't exactly call it wheezing, it's more like a really low pitched chirping noise. She'll be breathing normally and then all of a sudden start making this weird noise for quite a while, and then it stops for a while. Has anyone else had this problem with their rat? Should I take her to the vet, and how much do you think it will cost?

  1. Lots of people have described the sound of their rat with a respiratory infection as cooing, like a pigeon. So I'd say it's very possible he's got one. Normal rat sounds are grinding and clicking their teeth. The vet trip depends on how much your vet charges for a visit. 20-50 dollars for that, usually. If I were you, I'd bring at least $100 just to be safe, but you probably won't spend that much.

  2. I have to agree with Courtney.  To be on the safe side and take it to the vet.  If it is a respiratory infection, it's best to catch it early.  If she turns out okay, then at least you know for sure, and she gets a wellness check.
