  1. i have 3 female rats what all have had litters ranging from 15 to 3 babies all depends on how many she is carrying they dont normaly display any signs off pregnancy until two weeks on and then you will notice all 12 nipples becoming prominant they are easy to find.

They are pregnant normaly between 19 to 23 days max, end of the second week she should start to bulgde at the sides if you look at her from above lol and the big belly give it away lol.

When she is ready she will start nesting if you want to give bedding give her half a toilet roll, DO NOT give material cotton wool or tht shredded long paper towel type stuff the babies may get strangled... use toilet roll and that blue and white shredded discloth material she will shred it herself, she may if you have bars in you cage try to fold it into the bars as if to make a little tent/wall so you cant see in or move all bedding from one side off cage to the other or just shove everything to oneside cage mates as well lol ...

Feeding i gave my females cat milk or soya or kitten milk you can buy from shops in a srynge (spelling) do not give normal milk or cheese i gave them also scrabled eggs but just the eggs nothing else this is protein and nutrients. after the babies are born you can continue with the milk as it helps top up her milk and when old enough babies can have some very messy lol

They can get a bit distant and bity when our toffee had babies she had satan my 2ft male living on the second level for about 2 days hehe

my email is violafairy@hotmail.co.uk and i am moleogod on youtube we have lots of vids from tiny babies to them opening their eyes :)

good luck with the lil pinkies if she has them

  2. its difficult to tell with rats until a few days before they are due, its possible she could be making a nest just to sleep in but if she makes a really big nest and drags things such as her food bowl on the pile then its likely the nest is for babies.

As ity gets closer to the due date (if she is pregnant) then she will be noticibly fatter and they often look like they have swallowed a tennis ball whole.

The only other sign is to look her rings of hair loss around the nipples which show she is pregnant.

If she is pregnant you will need to take the male out of thr cage as he will eat the babies and after the babies are weaned don't put him back in for at least a few months as he will likely mate with her again. the birth is also slightly more dangerous (if she is pregnant) as she is still very young

  3. Since you have a male rat in the cage your female is most likely pregnant. The only reason it wouldn't be is if something is wrong with her organs. If she starts to uncover the nipples on her tummy so she can feed the babies then you know it is definite. After she has had the babies take out the father and the male babies or after a year you will end up with almost 100,000 rats! Hope this helps.

  4. At 10 weeks, pregnancy is possible, though she's a bit young.  Really, you need to get the male out of there NOW.  Breeding rats is not something to get into lightly, and you will be amazed at how quickly you could have 60 rats.  (Which would be around 3 litters, and could happen in 3 months.  and thats if none of the children multiply with each other..)

Typically, their bellies swell.  Towards the end, her hind legs will barely reach the ground and she'll look like she swallowed a baseball.  Her nipples will be prominant, and towards the end she'll start pulling hair out around them.  At least, if her mothering instincts kick in.  Rats are great mothers, but when they're too young or stressed they can easily neglect or kill their babies. Her personality will also change a bit, and she could get irritable towards the end of her pregnancy, too.

  5. Why on earth are you keeping a male and female together? That's pretty irresponsible of you. Breeding is not to be taken lightly. Separate the male from the female since she can get pregnant again right after giving birth (NOT healthy for her).

If you have the litter, I recommend keeping a female friend for her and male friend for the male. Do not mix sexes any more.

Another option is to get an emergency spay done. There are already a lot of homeless rats, plus spaying has a lot of health benefits for a female such as greatly reducing the risk of benign mammary and pitiuitary tumors later in life.

Information you'll need to know for the birthing can be found on my website: http://www.petinfopackets.com/rats/ratin...
