I have a rat terrier that's a year old, he is good at staying on our property but if someone walks on the street he goes crazy and will bark and chase someone to the other end of the street, We have tried everything to stop him from yelling to keeping him on leash but nothing, I have other dogs and they don't do this.... what else can i do?

  1. in ground pet eletric fence,,,,maybe a collar that has a light shock when he barks,,,or a kennel even. he is just being protective

  2. Well... if you don't have a fence then you shouldn't have him outside without a leash on.  Even if he's good at it, he's not 100% sure about it, and the last thing you need is to have him run out into a street after someone and get hit.  You need to keep him on a leash until you are absolutely sure he will never chase anyone like that.  Think of it like this too.  Every time he takes off chasing, he is being successful in it and that's only making him sure that this is something he can do.

So, what to do?  I would do basic desensitization.

Stand with him in the front yard with treats, have a friend walk in front of your house.  Keep him on the leash.  When he barks or lunges forward, ignore him or walk towards the house.  You might even want to put up a visual block (a garbage can for instance) that you can walk him behind so that he can't see them until you get him under control.  Every time he barks, don't say a word to him just walk him where he can't see them or back to the house.  When he looks at them and doesn't bark, a very small treat (1/2 pea size for a dog that size) to show him this is what you want, and talking to him and encouraging it.  Have the person stand still eventually and work closer.  The ultimate reward being the person gets to give him treats and he gets to say hello (but ONLY if he's sitting for you and being under your control.  Otherwise march him away.  Eventually he'll understand that every time he's quiet and listening to you he gets closer to what he wants, every time he barks he gets pulled further away.)

    Hope this helps.

  3. 1) Try to determine why your dog barks' eliminating the cause will increase your chances of success.

    2) Have your dog's favorite treat within reach.

    3) Praise the dog for barking once he starts by saying 'Good job' and    then 'What's the matter?'

    4) Tell the dog, 'Be quiet.'

    5) Wave the treat in front of your dog's nose. Most dogs will instantly quiet down, because they will be concentrating on smelling and attempting to l**k the treat, rather than barking.

    6) Keep praising the dog. Tell the dog that he is a good dog for being quiet.

    7) Let the dog have the treat after 3 seconds of quiet time.

    8) Wave another treat in front of your dog if he starts to bark again. This time, try not to let your dog have the treat until 5 seconds of quiet time have elapsed. Your dog should learn that after each successful quiet-time interval, he will be rewarded.

    9) Scold your dog every time he makes a mistake. If the dog barks, even for just an instant, as you're waving the treat in front of his nose, say 'Be quiet,' in a louder voice. Then reward the dog immediately after he stops barking.

    10) Increase the quiet-time intervals by 3 seconds each time: from 3 seconds to 6 seconds to 9 seconds and so on. It is possible to continue to a couple of minutes of quiet time during the first session, which would mean significant progress in curbing your dog's barking habit.
