I have never whelped puppies before( i know i know its not gonna be easy) but I just wanna know what is involved (costs, procedures, safety, etc.). I intend on selling them if possible. We were just going to have her fixed when we found out she was pregnant.

  1. 63 days give or take..

I want to recommend a book to you as it is good for learning about stuff like this.

  2. Dog pregnancy lasts for 63 days give or take a few days. Make an appointment with your vet for prenatal check-ups to ensure she's in good health throughout the entire pregnancy. Do some google searches on breeding and whelping so you can research all the information you can get your hands...or eyes on. Talk to your vet about the costs (because costs vary from vet to vet) also have your vet advise you of all the risks involved with a pregnant dog, things to watch for, and signs of distress.

You also have the option of setting up an abort/spay with your vet too if you want to go that route and not have to worry. If your dog is really young, this might be the safer route for her.

  3. 60-63 days and you do know you can still have her spayed and the litter aborted. By the time its all said and done for what you should sell those pups for you will still be in the red from the whole ordeal.

Cheaper to spay abort rather that pay for prenantal exams, xrays high quality puppy  kibble for during her pregnancy and while nursing, supplies to build a whelping box with pig rails, puppy formula and bottles/tubing if she rejects any of them, a scale to weight the pups daily to track weigh gain, ads to sell the pups, deworming the puppies, first shots, and all other expenses related to whelping and raising pups.

Not to mention the cost of a possible emergency c-section if one pup is too big for her to deliver or if she goes into distress.

  4. you can still have her fixed and the puppies aborted if you choose. just as long as she is not too far into her pregnancy.

dogs generally take i wanna say...64-ish days before the have their pups.

  5. first she needs x-rays and sonogram to see how many and make sure they aren't to big. There is a chance since they are a small dog that she may need a c-section my vet charges $750 when a female chi needs a c-section

You need to get wormer from the vet to worm mom and pups at 2,4,6,8and 10 weeks old they will need their first vaccine at 6 weeks.

Mom should be on puppy food for extra nutrients.

Mom and pups if no c-section should be checked within 24 hours after the welping to make sure all is ok and all has been passed.

Since this is her first litter know some dogs won't take to the pups and that will mean you will need to feed and make go potty every 2 hours day and night.
