My rat wants to hurt the baby rats?

I got my 2 baby rats today, they are 5 weeks old. My 5 month old rat wants to bite them. I tried to introduce my 5 month old rat to the 5 week old rats but the 5 month one wants to squash them. What should I do? Try to introduce them few weeks later?

They are separated, 5 month alone and 5 week babies together.

All females.

  1. You need to go through the proper procedure of introducing rats.  Rats can be territorial and will attack/bite new rats.  You have to gradually introduce new rats to each other and can't just throw them in a cage together.

Here's a great site to check out regarding introductions between rats: http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/information/...

In it it will tell you about putting them together in a neutral area like a bathtub and what to watch for regarding aggressive behavior.  How you'll have to scrub down the cage you eventually want to use, etc.  Rats can live together of any age (the same s*x though to avoid having a bagillion rat babies), so I would expect, with some patience, that they will eventually be able to live together.  The fact that your new rats are young shouldn't be a real issue.

    Hope that helps!

  2. separate them for now but keep the cages close together so they can get used to each others smell. Your probably going to have to be very patient because it could take quite a long time before they can be kept in the same cage.

  3. the bigger one will eat the baby ones put them in different cages.

  4. you should put them in seperite cages and hurry!!the mother could eat the babys!!

  5. Im sorry to here that.and im sorry to say this.u should keep them split apart in seperate cages if u dont want to risk hurting the babies.try not to risk it though i wouldnt want the babies to die! good luck.

  6. This is what id do in a dilema like this: i would take thwem away from each other straight away by putting the older rat in a cage and the baby rats in another cage or if you dont want to buy another cage get some wire mesh and split in down the middle of the cage half for the older one and half for the younger ones.

  7. u should keep the cages by each other that way they can get use to see each other and smelling each other on a daily bases and then let them spend time together each day so they get use to each other but watch carefully good luck hope i helped
