This morning I woke up to horrible ratty screams coming from downstairs and I found my eldest rat down in their lowest level, his mouth was stuck on the bars, he'd gotten his upper teeth aroung one bar and his nose was sticking out. His little feet were all bloody from scratching at the floor to try to get free. Oh it was so horrible!! The other two rats were watching him you could tell they were worried. He was in alot of pain so it was hard for me to free him. After a few minutes I was able to, but I had to push on his nose pretty hard to get his teeth back off the bar. It so happens we have an appointment today at the exotic vet(followup from his cyst) but the appointment is not until 7pm. I have some infant's motrin and tylenol. Should I give him some? He seems to be in pain still. I feel so bad for him. Also, how do I prevent him from doing this again? He wants to be out of the cage, he used to live out of the cage till we got the other rats. Thanks for any tips.

  1. oh the poor dear sorry im not much help but i hope he gets better

  2. Oh my god!! Just go to any basement in nyc and pick up another rat!! Rats are disgusting i never new people have them as pets!! you must not be from NYC

  3. idk.. take a gun and end his misery

  4. Call the vet and ask what to do.  He'll tell you.

  5. Call your vet.  He/she might actually want to have your rat come in earlier than your original appointment if your rat is in pain.

You can also try calling your emergency vet clinic in the area.  I did that when my rat kept scratching at her wound and made it bleed, and the nice woman on the phone was able to give me advice without having to come in.

I hope your buddy gets better!

  6. You could call your vet and see if you could bring him in any earlier. My rats vet said it was okay for them to have a tiny amount of non-asprin, but that was for my oldest rat who had HDL. I hope everything works out for you and your ratty!!!

  7. ask the vet what to do...and about him wanting out...you can make him a play pen out if boxes or evn make a wall of pillows! ♥♥

  8. Im sorry you can call the vet and also get a cage with bars closer together so he cant even fit his nose through!

  9. awww your poor rat. i hope he will be ok. can you buy some spray or something that tastes bad, so you can put it on the bars of the cage. i know you get them for dogs, but im not sure about rodents.
