  1. If you're looking to breed make sure you have the right conditions (sand and whatnot)--check out RedEarSlider.com they have tons of information on it.

Also, how long have your had the male? If he's been alone for a long time he probably won't do well with a new turtle added into the mix--most likely he will become violent toward her and could hurt or kill her (as she might hurt him if she's been alone most of her life as well). If you still want to try it, make sure they are around the same size.

  2. A definite maybe. Turtles are basically solitary, although they might tolerate other turtles when they are basking. The other problem is, why would you want to breed them? RESs are not only abundant, releases have set up colonies outside the natural range and have reached pest status. The last thing we need is more of them.

  3. Look into the legality of it first, I know here in Florida the state frowns on it. Do you have a HUGE tank or a pond for them? This is of course assuming that he puts up with a female... sometimes turtles just don't care. They're not social animals, and he won't necessarily be happy to have company outside of breeding season, especially if it makes things more crowded for him.

Sliders, I have two that are 36 yrs old!! Plus an 8 and 5 yr old these guys are very socail but only with alot pf room and food to share.

Mating rituals happen in my pond with my 2 males and 2 females. But since my girls are 36 and way past breeding these guys arms are all over the place asking rather begging to mate..I can still hear the girls laughing at these young boys.

Mating and laying of eggs happens in may thru june and hatchlings arrive in 89 to 90 days. It  requires a alot of reading up on first cause its expensive. The babies need a tank with land and a small amount of water cause believe it or not they can drown they have to learn how to swim.

I have had them in a pond for about 6 yrs now..
