  1. Yes, animals do need some time to acclimate to their surroundings.  But more significantly perhaps, pet store animals are rarely socialized.  They are just left in their cages, touched by humans only when necessary to clean their cages.  Hence animals purchased from pet stores are notorious for biting -- they aren't familiar with human hands.  (Actually, I've heard that hamsters are notorous biters in general, but I don't have a lot of direct experience, so I can't speak from experience on that one.)  This seems like a good website on training and taming hamsters.

  2. my bunny din't drink water either the 1st day i got her. Then when my mom told me to go show her where the water was, right when i was about to, she started drinking! lol and you just got your hamster, so don't take him out yet. let him get used to his new home and have him know it's his home. Take him out a week later, and to stop him from bitting your fingers, tap him on the head and say NO. and point your finger at him. and dont forget to let him sniff your fingers. then later in life he'll get used to you and he wonthave to sniff your fingers anymore. But you still should let him! and make sure he doesn't escape!!!!! He might not ome back. My cousins hamster escaped TWICE!!! its very hard to catch them once they escape!

  3. Yes it is very common that any type of dwarf hamsters will bite. Especially before they get to know you. The first few days it is NOT uncommon that he will be lathargic and look ill. It should go away in about a week or so. If it doesn't take him to a vet.

Try putting a small bowl of water in trhe cage but putting in pebbles or marbles so he/she can't drown.
