Question:

My rodent's water bottle keeps leaking - any advice?

I have two chinchillas and have been using a standard water bottle (with the ball bearing) and it keeps dripping - so much so that the bedding absorbs the water and needs to be replaced daily.

Anyone with small pets: Have you come across a brand of water bottle (or an alternate drinking device) that doesn't leak as much? Or have advice on how to slow the dripping?

  2. Put the cork in as hard as you can. If it is touching something that can absorb liquids like water, then remove it from that area. Other wise, use ducktape. =D

  3. When you fill the water bottle you should fill it all the way to the top.  I have never had a problem with water bottles leaking.  Make sure that the top is on tight and that it is secure.  It may just be faulty and you should just replace it.

  4. ah.. we use to have the same problem, use to drive us nuts!

idk what type you have, but we found that glass water bottles seem to work soo much better, preferably from the superpet company, comes with a nice spring to go across the top too.

hope that helps, and good luck

  5. most water bottles have a spout with a little ball stuck in it that is supposed to fit exactly in to the end of the tube when the animal drinks there teeth pushes the ball up and then the water comes out but most of the bottles are junk and not well put together so the water can leak between the ball, there are some bottels however that have a spring inside of the tube that pushes the ball up aganist the tip of the tube so that the water canot leak a good brand of water bottels that are leak proof are critter canteen cause they have the spring inside but eventally the sping will were out and youll need to by a new one cause it will drip. go to   http://www.leithpetwerks.com/prodpage.cf...

  6. Ours used to do that until we figured out the trick......     fill the water bottle to the top as usual then put the lid on.......    now with the water bottle still upright, squeeze all it until water spurts out the nozzle......    then invert is without letting the air back in and put it on the cage......     this will stop the dripping!!!

  7. have you checked to see if the bedding has been inside?  that's happened to me before and it's a mess.  Water bottles are like trial and error too, some just aren't made right or have defects and will leak anyway...which sucks.

these are some of the ones that I use though and have had good results.

ofcourse...i use hamster size sooooooo you need bigger haha.

make sure that your bedding isn't high enough to get into the bottle's spout.

if you have one of those, try exchanging it for a new one and see how that works.  at petsmart you can do returns and exchanges without a reciept, I used to work there.
