  1. If there is only one cat, only one box is needed.

Your roommate (or you) should cleaning your box out daily, and scraping to the bottom - also replace the old litter you are taking out daily with new litter (there should be 3-4 inches of litter). Adding additives with a smell is not advisable (they don't like things that have an odor - just use baking soda in the litter, 1/2 cup per 2 inches of litter).

  2. Unfortunately, the answer is no from a cat behavior stand point. It is on the recommendation of feline behavioral experts that there be multiple cat boxes in a house hold. The golden rule is one cat box per cat plus one. So if you have one cat living in your matchbox apartment then this is correct. The reason this is the standard is because of research on households with felines that inappropriately urinate (outside the box).

Personally, if you guys are not having a cat that is inappropriately urinating in the house and is using both boxes don't remove them. You could potentially initiate a behavioral urinating problem. IF the litter boxes smell then it is because your roommate is not tending to them like they should. They should be cleaned daily and changed out weekly.

  3. My first thought is:

Are cats allowed in your apartment complex?

If not, you have options.  You can tell your roommate to get control of the litter box situation, or you'll simply have the cats removed.

    Problem solved.

  4. Small apt sux, but I'd say keep 2 litter boxes if said cat is very large.  I have 2 indoor kattens (teenagers) and keep 3 around.  But make certain he cleans both nightly!!  And recently got a litter locker, like a diaper genie, went the next day to get another, thing totally rocks!  Easy to throw clumpy litter in, turn dial and empty when full.  NO SMELL!!!  I've always had cats and keep one more than needed.  But admittedly people call me crazy and I agree 100%.

  5. it sounds as if your room mate is not sterilizing the cats litter boxes or cleaning them on a regular basis.2 options you move out and find somewhere smell free or tell your room mate to clean up his cat smells or he can leave.this day and age their is no need for a apartment to smell if it his disinfected and cleaned properly..i wouldn't put up with it that's for sure.so i would say you or him..

  6. Yea,

Two cat boxes are enough for a cat. That's enough cat boxes for 2 cats actually.

    xx

    Good Luck
