My router dropped my connection?

I have a NETGEAR Rangemax 802.11g Wireless Router aka WPN824 and it just dropped my connection, but the thing is I just bought the router today. My router is in the basement, and my connection is only getting "Very Good," not "Excellent". Although download speed ranges about 350 kbps. If on the first day I have it, it's already dropped connection, am I going to get more dropped connections? The person who helped me told me that the router was the best of it's kind, and I had done some research and it seemed like it was the best as well.

  2. generally Netgear is a safe choice when it comes to routers, does your laptop connect to any other Wifi networks, just to rule out the laptop, make sure the laptops Wifi card is set to maximum performance? is there any electrical devices that could be causing interference microwaves > baby monitors > wifi networks in the same area? try changing the router to another frequency. more below
