okay, before i call geek squad and spend 150 dollars, i was wondering if someone could help me! i have a linksys router. it was fine when i set it up in January. then, about in march it would keep resetting. so i'd have to go on the main computer, the desk top, and not reinstall it, but do the set up again, and it would work. now, my desk top wont even recognize the router, so i cant use the router and i cant use my laptop (b.c its wireless). does anyone know why it would keep resetting like this? and now having the desk top not recognize it? thanks everyone =)

  1. Have you configured the router for DHCP and is it enabled (automatic ip config)

  2. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but sounds like you need a new router, routers DO NOT loose settings by just turn them on and off, but if the router itself (mainly the firmware) is damaged, (could be overheating, just a possibility), there is very few things you can do, if after doing a total reset of the router and you plug in your computer, and the computer cannot connect to the router so you can reprogram, that is really bad news, you may need to get a new router, and don't ask the Geek Squad, they maybe good but you really look smart enough to go to the store, buy a new one, program that and test for yourself, if the new one works.. Well you got a winner..

Good Luck, and don't waste your money you seemed smart enough.

  3. Top things that come to mind are overheating, bad power, interference, or a defective router.

Call Linksys and they can probably help you for free...it's worth a try and only takes time and a phone call...chances are you don't need the geek-squad to fix it...

Make sure it's got air ventelation (nothing sitting on/around it's vents) and that you don't have any 2.4ghz cordless phones that can interfere with it.

If your lights flicker a lot (Look at the old light bulbs to see flickering, not new florescant ones) then you may want to get a "UPS" - uninterruptable power supply for your computer, router, and modem.  I live in an old house with my grandparents when I'm at college and when the AC kicks on it was tripping my internet out (and the lights all flickered in the house) so that fixed my problem.

  4. are the cords connecting them good? are u sure they are plugged in all the way?

have you uninstalled any programs off your computer?

or it might just be a faulty modem

i dont understand when u mean by reset like...it turns off and then on

or the software isnt working correctly
