Question:

My school doesn't recycle plastic...how do I get them to start?

My middle school doesn't recycle plastic, causing us 700-800 students who bring water-bottles to have to throw them away. My science teacher tried last year to get the school to try to recycle plastic--they turned her down. She tried again this year--it didn't go through. So what I'm asking is, are there any ways to encourage my schools' activity in recycling MORE than less with plastic?

Thanks!

  1. I Would suggest to talk 2 your principal or school president.

  2. talk to the school administrators yourself, talk to your classmates, and your class officers (if you school has them).  Get the word out and lead by example!!  If the school doesn't sponsor something, perhaps you can round up a few good intentioned volunteers to spearhead a movement amongst the students.  Local corporate involvement may be good to have assist as well.

Since there is a lot of plastic water bottles being thrown out, you can even ask your classmates to re-use the bottles by bringing them home to refill.

  3. well pay them a penny if they recycle and sell it to those stores that buy plastic for  5 cents that way you have more money to pay the people to recycle for money and also you save youre inviroment. good luck!

  4. That sucks big time! Try talking to all of your friends and non friends at school and telling them to give you their water bottles and cartons or better yet go to the principle and ask if you can put a trash can just for plastic near the other trash can were the students dispose the food. Its worth a shot. happy earth day

  5. Talk to school administrators, such as the principal or even a teacher.

  6. Kudos to you for caring.  It's people like you that make all the difference.

Start a petition, (get your science teacher on board for help with this).  Get a respectable number of signatures from students and staff.  Make copies of your petition and provide it with a cover letter to your principal, your school administrative office (send to several committee members), your local city council, the mayor and several staff members and a copy to local newspapers.  Do not include defamatory comments in your cover letter.  But, do make it clear that this is an important issue to you and that previous attempts have been unsuccessful.  Presenting it to your local PTA might also be a good idea.  I know from experience that parents carry a lot of clout with the city council and the school administrators.

    Good luck to you!!!!!!!!

  7. Just get more and more people to lobby for it.

Contact your local sanitation department or mayoral office and get their advice, soon they should budge.

I live in conservative Idaho, if we can do it, you can too.

  8. yah me and my bffs are making a petion that the whole school signed u can do that and give it to the principal he cant turn u down its 800 to one
