  1. He is not too lazy to write. He has a disability that prevents him from being successful when writing things out longhand.

It is none of your business exactly what his problem is that resulted in receiving this adaptive technology. So you do not know if the student has cerebral palsy, Asperger's, dysgraphia, dyslexia, visual problems, eye hand coordination problems, muscular dystrophy, etc.

Plus, he is just using the laptop, it is not his to keep.

At my school students with specialized equipment do not get to take it home, the equipment stays at school. If the parents want to duplicate it for home use, they must find a way to finance that.

  2. My son has autism and has sensory issues so writing is physically painful for him.  The school district began teaching him to type when he was 8 yrs old.  He is VERY smart but his handwriting looks like a Kindergartner's.  Sometimes things like a laptop are a reasonable accomodation just like a Braille book for a blind student or an assistive listening device (ie hearing aid) for a hearing impaired student.

  3. As a special education teacher in high school, I can give a reason why this might have happened.  First of all, I highly doubt the school "gave" him the laptop.  More likely, he is able to use the laptop during his time at the high school.  Secondly, I have many students who are fully capable of writing, but greatly need a computer for writing assignments for a variety of reasons: writing is painful, writing is very sloppy, need for grammar/spelling checking, the list goes on.  Finally, maybe you are right...there are a multitude of abuses of the special education system, and some students get away with A LOT!

  4. I knew a kid like that in high school. He had several "issues" and his handwriting was really sloppy so he got to type everything on his laptop while the rest of us got hand cramps. It may have been immature, but I hated that!

PS: That was not a question...so...yeah...

  5. u sud be happy

him havin to hav a laptop shows his lack of motivational skills meanin he will hav a less chance of bein empoloyed in the future

meanin u on the other hand will hav a bigger chance, and an advantage in tests becoz its so much quicker ritin ur answers urself than havin to explain it to som1 els, n them to rite it down, n then tellin them they roteit down rong, lol

    =P
