My school will be having a Talent Show next year. I've thought of being in the show but a lot of people don't take the show seriously. This is probably because some people think the Talent Show is boring or the acts aren't great. I've been told I can sing and write good poetry.

Here are some songs I've thought of singing:

I'm Gone, I'm Going - Lesley Roy

Ready For Love - India Arie

Only Fooling Myself - Kate Voegele

If I don't sing, I could write a poem and read the poem. Singing might capture more interest though. Should I sing or read poetry? Should I even be in the show?

  1. If you are going to do it, sing. I think you should enter but think about it; you can't chicken out at the last moment and if it goes wrong you might be laughed at. (I'm not being negative) But yeah, it's a good thing to do.

  2. Why not?  Do it and enjoy the moment.  And maybe then people will take the show seriously by you giving them a good act!

  3. Many kids want to perform -- but they don't have the guts. Whether they let you know or not, many will respect you for having the guts to get up there in front of an audience.

If you want to perform, then perform! Who cares if anyone else takes the show seriously, it's a good experience for you. I have a feeling you'll regret it if you don't give it a try.

If you are going to sing, commit to your performance. Don't get shy, give it your all. Seriously. There is nothing worse than a performer who doesn't totally commit to their performance. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse! That will make you feel confident and you'll do your best. Choose the song that you are most comfortable singing.

Have you listened to your recorded voice? If not, do that and see what you need to work on, unless you have a teacher who can tell you. If you have a mac, you can sing into garage band and get a good idea of how you sound. Those small Olympus and Sony tape recorders have good enough sound that they are used by professional singers for rehearsal. Often it's best to practice with the song with the voice to keep on key. You can get good karaoke versions at itunes and karaoke-version.com when you're ready. (And don't worry if you're not a great singer, many recording artists aren't, but they put on a good show and do it with confidence.)

Poetry is great, especially if it's something you can kind of act out or is especially relevant to your audience. But music might get them going a little more.

    Good luck!

  4. HI Stephanie,

Yes.. why not participate in the talent show?   And if you want to sing,  I think that is better than reading poetry.  As it is, most kids don't like English class,  so poetry is not going to hold their attention.   They might even be talking while you are reading your poem, and you would feel bad about that.

No,  I feel that singing is going to be one of the most popular of the talent selections and if your song is a good one... the audience will pay attention to you and enjoy your performance.

    Good Luck.
