Question:

My shoulder hurts when I lift my arm above my shoulder - what's wrong?

My shoulder hurts when I lift my arm above my shoulder (like taking off a shirt and other stuff like that). Its been like this for a long time but now seems to be getting worse. I'm in my 20s so I don't think I'm getting arthritis.

I can replicate the pain every time if I stand straight up and lift my arm straight out. If I let my hand raise above my shoulder level, my shoulder hurts really badly.

Any advice?

  1. Did you do anything strenuous lately? Like, work out after a long time, lift something heavy, ran into something? Since you can move it, I don't think it's dislocated. It might have a hairline fracture, but when you press it does it hurt? Or only when you move the joint? I'd say go see a doctor just in case, unless you know it's more likely to be a muscle sprain. Get better :)

  2. Why don't you make an appointment to see your GP? He can examine you and maybe refer you to a Physiotherapist.

It's best to go now, as it might get worse as time goes on, like you said.

    Good luck!
