My shower/tub faucet came on all by itself today and I don't know why.?

The handle would turn all the way around, like the stop was broken, but when I pulled it apart, I found that the valve assembly looked okay. I messed with it for a little while and I can turn the water off now but not turn it on. Suggestions?

Either you had really hard pressure from the city water pipes or the faucet is shot and you need a new one.  If it was pressure though, you should still be able to turn it back on.  After you put it back on, did you remember to turn the water valve back on?
