My shrimp keep dying, what am i doing wrong? I have both a ten gallon and a 30 gallon tank. Originally, in my 10 gal with no light or heater my shrimp did very well, i had asian filter shrimp (bamboo or wood shrimp they are also called) and ghost (skeleton) shrimp. After purchasing my 30 gal (this time with a light) i moved both species into there. About 2 weeks after they all died. I though it was nitrite poisoning so i bought a de-toxifier (takes care of chlorine, chloramine, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate) and tests. The tests showed no signs of anything wrong, but don't test for ammonia so i de-toxified anyway. I just bought indian dwarf shrimp (very similiar to ghost) and they too perished this time within 12 hours of purchasing them. I started with 5 and now have 1. They were in the tank with a male and female betta in the 10 gal, but so were my original shrimp which lasted for over 2 months in the same tank, before being moved to the larger one. What the heck is going on?????

  1. did you cycle your 30 g tank?

if not, that could have caused your shrimp to die off, here is an article on cycling http://fins.actwin.com/mirror/begin-cycl...

  2. Betta will nip and even swallow shrimp whole. In the wild they eat INSECTS, and shrimp are similar to looks so the bettas will hunt them down.

Bamboo shrimp are pretty big and cannot be eaten whole, maybe getting pecked at by the bettas.

    Ghost shrimp can be eaten.

Buying chemicals to bring down harmful spec like nitrates is the WORST way to go. Those chemicals only cover up not take away the problem and for all you know the chemicals are bad for shrimp and you just contaminated the whole tank. Read if their is copper, because than you would have to tear down the whole tank and start again. Copper is LETHAL to shrimp.

Try a tank without fish and purchase cherry red shrimp. They breed like rabbits and are appealing due to their redness.

And a HEATER is always needed. These shrimp are exported or bred in farms where it is warm. Cold Water KILLS tropical shrimp in which almost all come from.
