Zodiac symbols originated with constellations found at particular times or seasons of the year. Since many people did not read, symbolism was used to provide visual reference. The characters, stories, and representation of the zodiac symbols became associated with temperment, outlook, and in some cases, fate of those born under their sign. The signs of the zodiac are not universal, however - other cultures consider different seasons (i.e. Chinese Zodiac is based on annual cycles) to drive the signs and associated behaviors of those "under" such signs.

Freemasonry encourages the study of Astronomy (the study of celestial bodies and movements). As such, celestial art, and the symbols of the zodiac are often found in old lodges or buildings with Masonic history. In the days when Freemasonry was being documented, there was little difference between astronomy and astrology.
