what do they eat?  because if they are carnivores, your "stick insects" are fully developed praying mantids.

A picture would help. Most stick insects do not have wings. The ones that do are usually the males of some species. Some species of stick insects have both sexes with wings. Since males are outrageously rare, I am guessing that both the male and females have wings. I also guess you live in the south east(Given that you live in the US), where such insects are not rare. Also, most stick insects are hermaphrodites. However, the only thing I can be sure of without the pic, is that you got some wonderful specimens.
