My sister was constipated and so my mom told her to drink some apple juice, and she breastfeeds exclusively so now her baby has diarrhea. What can she give him to help him back to normal?

  1. Did mom drink the apple juice or the baby?

If baby gets nothing but breastmilk they will probably never get diarrhea.  Often people think a breastfed baby has diarrhea when they do not, in a breastfed baby liquid p**p is normal, diarrhea would be foul smelling and usually contain mucous or blood.

If a baby under 6 weeks truly has diarrhea or constipation they need to be seen by a doctor within 12 hours.

It is normal for the stools of the breastfed baby to be mostly liquid, with small curds that resemble cottage cheese (some say it resembles runny egg yolks). It has very little odor. Usually the baby will have a bowel movement each time he/she nurses. It may or may not sound "explosive". These liquid stools are not diarrhea. Diarrhea in the breastfed baby is rare. A baby who has diarrhea would have stools that are very frequent, usually green and full of mucus (and/or specks of blood), and almost always foul smelling.

  2. There is not really anything she can give him. If she were to take something herself it could harm the baby. The diarrhea will wear off quickly and baby will be back to normal!
