My sister just found out she has mono, and it's contagious. I have to share a bedroom with her, and I really don't want to get sick 1 week before school starts!

How can I avoid getting sick?

~Thanks for your help!

  1. You need to share a drink with her, or use her toothbrush, or eat a meal she prepared and sneezed on. It's called "contagious by droplet" meaning that a bodily fluid is the contagion. You won't get sick unless you manage to ingest her saliva somehow.

Even then, however, it's not always a guarantee that you'll get sick. I dated a guy who caught mono and he didn't tell me. I rushed in to see a doctor and he gave me some antibiotics to help "fend off" the infection if it happened as he couldn't find signs of mononucleosis.

If you're particularly worried that you may have caught it, go ahead and make an appointment with your doctor. Prevention is definitely important if you want to start school healthy!

  2. Well, I'm sorry to hear your sister has mono. Too bad it is right before school starts! Ask your mom if you can sleep in other room, even if it is in a sleeping bag! Do everything you can to not get sick!

  3. i would say not to drink off of ne cups that she uses ....dont brush ur teeth with her tooth brush, dont let her kiss u on the cheeck or ne where on ur face....just dont use things that she would put in her mouth(like a lollipop or candy-etc)

  4. Try not to let her sneeze on you.. don't drink out of the same cup.. don't use the same utensils.. You will only get it if she spits in your mouth pretty much.. it isn't airborne.

  5. sleep outside.

  6. You can only catch mono from exchanging saliva or blood.

That would be like sharing cups or silverware or kissing. (which I don't think you'll be doing with your sister).

So sharing a room or hanging out won't make you catch it!!
