Question:

My sister inlaw did something shady?

I volunteered to help her at her coffee shop because I lost my job. She trained me in and then decided to hire someone a week later because she wanted a closer. I told her all about my job situation when she trained me and I even closed with her. Should I be mad? She didnt tell me she was hiring someone until an hour before the interview. I think it was horrible that she knew I needed a job and hired someone who already has one.

  1. When you volunteered to help her what did you say?  Because something like "Oh, well I don't have a job right now so I can help you out" means something a lot different then "Oh, I'm looking for a job and would be interested in helping there".  The first implies that you only want to work until she doesn't need you any longer.  The second implies that maybe you'd like the job.  People don't read minds so if you didn't make it clear that you would have like to be hired on then you can't blame your sister in law for hiring someone else.

  2. Very inconsiderable. Unless you did something to make her think you would be a burden or could not handle closing her shop. If not, just let it slide. And make it clear to her that you need her for nothing. We'll see who she goes to when her coffee shop is closing down.

  3. Well that's family for you, just forget it and get on with your life its not worth bothering about.

  4. There is a big difference between volunteering (meaning FREE) and being employed (a paid employee). You can't just insert yourself into another person's business.

Don't waste any rage. Just move on and find another job. Don't bother asking for help from the in-laws ever again. This is probably their personality.
