  1. 7 is getting a bit old for that kind of baby-talk, unless of course she's doing it on purpose for fun.

Hasn't her teacher mentioned something about this?  It would normally show up in her English grade.

What happens when you ask her why she says those words like that?

  2. yes, someone should be helping and correcting and spending the needed time and patience with that child.

how will the parent feel when the school calls them in to sign a form saying they are labeling her learning disabled so THEY can correct the speech?

This is the problem, in school to learn writing and spelling, you have to be able to say or sound out at this age the best you can,  the word correctly to spell it.

They need to determine if it is a speech, intellect  or hearing problem and work to correct it. So if its just that NO one is talking to her and correcting her patiently and firmly, it will cause some problem, time and possible labeling and embarrassment.

So yes, it is kind of a big deal.

she will do better in life and school and be better respected if she spoke correctly.

  3. spaghetti is a word many young children pronounce wrong so not too much of a worry just turn it into a fun game teaching her how to say it properly..............

my son used to say SpagheDDi

    daughter Missghetti

    step daughter said Basghetti

they all say it properly now thought

  4. As a teacher, I think mispronunciations like that are fairly normal.

I would only be concerned if there are certain letters/sounds she can't make, or if she consistantly has trouble with consonants. But just making a couple of mistakes with certain words is very normal until age 12 or so. Some adults still mispronouce some words.

Simply correct her when she mispronounces things. In time, the correct pronuncation will sink in.

  5. At 7 it's pretty bad.  Have your parents contact your school district so she can get some speech extra help at school.

  6. I think at this age she's old enough to be corrected.  Tell her, "It's pronounced spaghetti, not pasghetti.  Try to say it the right way."  It may be that she's getting attention for baby talk ("Oh, isn't that cute!") and maybe she needs to start getting some gentle correction so she understands it's not cute anymore, and it will start to hold her back in life if she doesn't learn the proper way.

  7. It's not bad no matter what the reason. If she is having speech problems, have her diagnosed. If it's because she just got used to saying it that way or thinks it might get her some attention, ignore it or remind her of the actual pronunciation.

  8. It's a bit concerning. She is a little old to be having these speech difficulties.

  9. you should try getting her to slow down when she talks and get her to break down the word anunciate ever part of the word....but if she has speech thearpy in her school you should talk to her teacher about putting her in them....i use to have a lisp (still do) and in the 5th grade they put me in classes and i speak alot better now...but still to this day if i dont slow down and think about what i say i still have a bad lisp
