My sister recieved a dodgey call from 07917 356 949?

it called her place of work and asked for her next of kin when she went to the phone it was dead she did 1471 and called back the number and got a german sounding answer machine. any ideas what this could be

That is strange, it might have been a wrong number, or maybe some sort of fraud thing. Good luck and I know this might sound a little extreme but if it really irks you, call the police.

Prank call. The fact that the person called her place of business is unusual because this call was from someone she doesn't know, but who apparently knows her or of her.

She can give the number to the local telephone service, explain what happened. Most telephone companies take a dim view of this sort of thing and they may follow up. Just reporting it as a prank call puts the telephone company on alert, so that if your sister is called again, and reports it again, the company can then take action with a nuisance complaint against the caller.

Sounds to me like it was a troubled spirit trying to make contact with the living.  Make sure she doesn't put her ear too close to the receiver or she may get a very powerful shock from the unknown spirit.  Call an exorcist if need be.  Make sure to ask if they are familiar with telephonic spirits.

Can't have been a German number, because Germanys country code is 0049. No Idea what 79 is, or if it wasn't a call from some phone in the US with just a freaky answering machine.
