Question:

My sisters pony doesn't go into his corners ?

My sisters pony doesn't go into certain corners when hes at certain shows. He's not scared , because when she stops him at the corner , he has his ears fairly back listening to her , with his eyes half open. She uses a lot of inside bend (pulling her inside rein and squeezes with her inside leg), but he manages to pull his body away from the corner. Its his only vice , and if he could go into his corners then he would be perfect . My sister is an excellent rider as well , so its not that shes weak or doesnt know what shes doing .

Any suggestions ?

  1. she apparently doesnt know what she is doing if she cant get a pony into certian corners...first check which corners and if there is any common themes which could mean mild lameness or sensitivity also you dont use inside leg and inside rein to get a horse to bend this creates a kneck bend and it is incorrect she will need a crop and she will have to tell him to go into the corner with her inside leg and OUTSIDE rein along with her outside back a LITTLE bit and she will have to be turning her shoulders a little also if he doesnt listen then circle and next time past the corner have ur crop ready and ask with ur leg and almost expect him not to bend and when tht happens give him a smack with the crop.but i do worn that if he doesnt bend then he may have some suppleing issues that can be caused by tension weather it be in tack or the RIDER so have those checked first before it is ruled as a bad habit

  2. do it a bunch at the walk, when he does it good at the walk praise him, then trot him, punish him when he does it wrong by smaking him with a crop. my horse picks that up quickly and fixes mistakes when i smack him. then keep doing that untill he gets it and when he does PRAISE him LOTS!!! and do it 1 more time perfectly, then im not sure if he canters but if he does, just do the same thing and this should work,    GOOD LUCK!!!!

  3. try having her hold her inside reign tight, squeezing with her inside leg, and squeezing the inside reign towards his head and back.

if she has that inside reign held tight, it's like a wall, that he can't get past, and he will move over into the corner from the squeezing of the inside leg and outside reign.

if that does not work, then at home, try using a crop on the inside leg, just tap him slightly and he will move over.

then hopefully he will apply that at shows.

  4. Use outside rein and inside leg, be aggressive.

  5. I strongly dissagree that you should just smack your horse with a crop when it doesnt listen and that it isnt the right way to deal with a horse that is doing something like this. what i recomend is when he doesnnt go into his corners circle him and make use a lot of leg. But i wouldnt just smack him when something goes wrong. something else you can try is growling at him
