I tested out my sharpen skates today and they gripped the ice so much it was very difficult for me to stop. Are there any solutions to this and can I bring them back to the store for a re sharpening to make it more dull?

  1. run on cement for a little bit that should do the trick.

  2. Skate on them, It will strengthen you legs and dull the edges.  You should ask for a little less of a hollow next time you get them sharpened.  stay away from 1/2 inch, that is even sharp for a goalie skate.  try 3/4 or 9/16.

  3. Yeah, ask for a larger size hollow- the larger the number the less grip.

In the meantime, go to the step off from the bench and scrape them against the plastic a few times. That should help.

  4. sprint with them on poorly maintained concrete.

  5. Keep using them? Is this a trick question?

  6. you can always ask them to change the hollow on the edge (its most likely a 1/2" that you had done), have them reduce it to a 3/8th" and see if that changes.

the only thing i would say about zam's comment with the kickplate is, if you dont do it properly you'll just kill your edge and have to get them redone asap.

  7. Before you go back and pay for less of a hollow at the sharpener, which would work fine, I always run my blades up and down along the bottom of the open door to your bench on the plastic dasher or kick plate.

This will take some of the bite out without seriously dulling your overall edge... and it wont cost you a dime.  If that doesn't work, just tell your sharpener that you have too much bite and ask him to reset his hollow when he does your skates.
