  1. 1 tblspn of hydrated lime in a gallon of water and poor it over roots

  2. Hydrangeas prefer acid soil with a pH range of 4.5 to 6.5. It is often mistakenly reported that the acidity of the soil determines the color of the blossoms. Most hydrangeas are pH sensitive plants and are unable to take up iron when grown in alkaline soil. This becomes evident when the leaves become chloratic and take on a yellowish look.

But it's the presence or lack of aluminum in the plant that determines the color of the blossoms. In neutral to alkaline soil, aluminum is tied up in the soil and unavailable to the hydrangea, so blossoms are pink. Adding aluminum sulfate to alkaline soil will turn the flowers blue. If you have acid soil and want to blue flowers pink, add lime to mix. It's best to do a soil test to find out where you stand and how much of these products to add.

  3. Add some wood ash to your compost/soil

  4. add lime

  5. Lime from the garden center.

  6. Hydrated lime is the accepted method of raising soil pH.  It is applied at different rates depending on the soil type and pH level.  Visit your local garden store and they will help you out with how much and how often to use it.  Wood ashes and some other materials can be used as well but are harder to measure.  Plan on taking a couple of years to correct the soil pH if it is very acid.
