My son's daycare woke my Hus up today (he's a RN who works nights) to have him come get our son because they

thought he had Impetigo. My son is sensitive to mosquito bites and has a least a dozen "spots" on him right now. A mosquito was in his room and bit him all night last week and one got him three times last night. I've been covering the bites up on the days he goes to school (mostly to ward off MRSA), but I forgot this morning. The bad thing is, he is sensitive to the adhesive on the bandages, so the area around the bites look red and raw. I've already explained this to his teachers twice. Impetigo is blisters that break and crust, not what my son has.

The bites don't look anything like Impetigo, so I'm upset he was called to take him to the doc for nothing.

If I have even thought for a SECOND this was contagious, I would have taken him to the doc myself (I was in clinicals until after 3 today).

Should I say something to the Director? If so, what?

  1. Strange that you called it "nothing" simply because you know the problem your child has.  And you're more concerned about being inconvenienced than being considerate of the point of view of the daycare. They have to be concerned not only for your child but others too.  As a licensed practice, they did the right thing.  You should have told them about it, instead of hiding it.

I believe the daycare did what was right. To have a careless attitude,  you won't like it if something was wrong with your child and they didn't notify you.

There is nothing to tell the director other than your failure to tell them your child's condition.

  2. No...they were doing their job....be glad they did....

  3. Actually what your child's school did was not wrong.  If a teacher sees something on a child's skin that they feel may be of concern they have every right to call the child's parents.  It is the schools/centers job to look after the health and safety of all children in their care.  They were doing their job.  I know as a parent it is probably very frustrating but you should be thankful that they take things like this serious and are very cautious because you never know.  Just get a Dr. note and you won't have to worry.

  4. I don't think I'd confront them. Just be glad that took it seriously - some day care might not have.

  5. While I understand that it was inconvenient for you and your hubby to pick him up from daycare, I think they were just doing their due diligence to insure the safely and health of all of the children in their care.  If your son has many mosquito bites along with red spots from bandages, I can understand that that could look like and easily be mistaken for something contagious.  You should be glad that your child goes to a daycare where they are so on top of things.

  6. They were acting as they're supposed to. With things like MRSA going around daycares are much more strict about illnesses. If there's a chance something could be contagious they'll usually send them home. Better safe than sorry.

  7. Just explain everything you just said to the Director. Tell him/her that you understand why they are concerned, but in the future it won't be necessary to have your son picked up because he has already been to the doctor. Tell the Director you appreciate their concern, but your son just has sensitive skin.

  8. The best bet is to bring in a note from your doctor. Sadly, most experienced day care folks have had too many experiences with parents who assure them that something isn't contagious when it is, all in an attempt to have the child stay in day care. They have to be cautious to protect all the children.
