Question:

My son's toe nails and finger nails turning colors and coming off??

My son who is almost 3 years old has one thumb nail, one index finger nail, and both big toe nails that are separating from the cuticle, like they are going to fall off. Under the thumb nail it is light green, white under the index finger nail, and under the toe nails, it is turning black. He did not have any injuries to any of the fingers or toes, and when you touch them or push on them, it doesn't bother him at all. I first noticed the toe nails a few days ago, and noticed the finger nails yesterday. But they seem to get darker in color or change in color each day.

Someone please tell me what this is. Is this something common that will go away or should I take him to the doctor tomorrow? If anyone has experienced this, please tell me your story and what had to be done. Thanks everyone in advance!

  1. why are you on the computer?

Ok but he's fine?? How do you know?? Have you tested his blood? He needs to go to the ER

  2. Sounds like it could be a circulatory problem.  He needs to be seen by a doctor.

  3. Falling-off-nails is in medics described by the word 'Onychomadesis'. The handresearch Nail Encyclopedia describes several causes of this nail condition (varying from: nail infection to systemic illness). You can read more about this condition at:

  4. take him to the doctor quick this is not normal

  5. You should have a thoughtful conversation with your child, it is possible that he has a conversion disorder, and that this finger discoleration is just the physical amnifestation of his psychological problem. Regardless, you should take him to a docter as quickly as possible, because this could be an infection.

Good luck and cheers,  sincerely, Varg
