When can children say these letters... S, L, R? My son just turned 3 years old. He says the word CAR like CAHH. When he says the word STICK it sounds like DDDICK.

How can I help him pronounce those letters correctly. Any tips?

  1. My son is 2 1/2 and has the exact same problems as your son.  He pronounces snake nnnnake and grandpa gampa and love you....ove you.  My pediatrician has recommended for him to go into speech therapy.  I was iffy on it, because I felt like I could work with him, but it doesn't seem to work.  My neighbors son went to speech therapy and he actually got to start nursery school at 3, and it's free for nursery and preschool.  Good Luck!

  2. your son is speaking more than my 3yo daughter.   My two youngest are hearing impaired, so they speak what they hear.  They have hearing aids but don't wear them consistently.

They are both getting speech therapy several times a week.

My son is now 4-1/2 and I can understand most of what he says, but it's been a long road.

    has his hearing been tested?

    Patrick

  3. My 3 year old son also sounds like he has a Boston accent.  The doctor told me to reinforce the correct way to say the words he is mispronouncing.  Oh and also don't worry three is still very young:)

  4. I think it's normal, my son is 19 months old and when he speaks his is similar, when he says CAR he says CAAH but being British, this sounds normal lol! But if he says SNAKE it comes out as Sake, When he tries to say Nannan he says YaYa, when he says grandad he says Gagad. I was wondering if he would have a speech difficulty when he gets older but now i know others have the same worry, i think it must be normal :)

  5. I wouldn't worry too much about it just yet. He is still developing his language. Make sure though that you are using correct language and not talking baby talk to him, that can slow his learning down. When he says "Look, CAHH!" say "Yes, I see the CAR" and put emphasis on the r, that way he hears it correctly.

  6. I work at a childcare center. I'm the preschool teacher for the youngest group of preschoolers (the ones that just turn 3.)....

Hes still young and he should grow out of this. To help him along you can repeat the words hes saying and put emphasis on the missing letter sound. For example:

"Mommy look at the blue Cahh".....you say "Oh I see the blue CaRRR"...

If hes in a childcare center they should do an eveluation on him. If they dont, you can certianly request one.

I have a little boy who just turned 4 this month and he still has trouble with the R. When he says another teachers name (her name is karen) he pronounces it as Kawen.

I'd wait until hes 3.5 and then if you still notice hes having a lot of difficulty you can even ask his pediatritian.

  7. Work with him, but those sounds come with age mostly by 4 or 5. If you are really concerned check with a speech pathologist.

  8. work with him every time he makes a mistake. like a is ah and e eh then say every word at a time. When you want him to say stick you have to say first ss like a snake's noise. Then sst then when he knows the word,continue... sstiick. Then repeat it stick. And i think this advice would help.... That's what my mother does when i don't know what the word is.
