  1. Sounds like the Air Force Reserve, not regular Air Force. They did nothing "behind your back", your son did. I assume he is 18 or over and an adult for legal purposes. He will go through boot camp and training and then return home to serve his monthly duties. He could go overseas if his unit is called up.

  2.   Sounds like your son signed up for the Air National Guard or the Reserves.  He will be gone a while for Basic Training, and Tech School.  The amount of time he is gone will vary depending on what job he is going to do in the service.  He may very well have to go to war, just depends on his job.  I joined the Air Force and with my Basic Training and Tech School I was gone almost 2 years just for training.  However, I did get leave 2 times in those two years.  Most AF jobs do not require this long of training but some do, and sometimes the Air National Guard will only want them to do certain aspects so they will only get partial training, just depends.  It will be hard for you when he is gone, but try to think of it as a big opportunity for him, he will learn a skill, he will grow up, and be more responsible.  Good Luck!
