My son asked me another question. why does a vegitable become soft if you put in oil

i was demonstrating how does it rains to my son at home. i boiled the water and holded a plate on the top. all water droplets were collected on the plate. i stopped boiling. the droplets on the plate slowly started droping. that is nothing but rain. Suddenly he saw a pan with oil and some vegatable in in which was kept for boiling and asked me this question. How to answer him

  1. If the vegetable doesn't have a waterproof covering, like a skin, it allows the oil to soak into the flesh of the vegetable, and this is what makes it turn soft.
