Question:

My son can't remember important things?

My 15 year old does great in school. He is forgetful and not very detailed at times. My concern is that when he is required to fill out a form, he honestly can't remember his address or sometimes his phone number. He draws a blank. I'm concerned. His food likes are so limited that he basically wants the same thing for just about every meal. He is taking a teenage multi-vitamin, but what do you think is going on? He has really bad allergies and is on Zyrtec & Claritin. Could this be a factor? Is it puberty? It's driving me crazy.

  1. I would go see a dr. When i was a teen i could remember everything, every friends phone number, ages, etc. (now, i'll be lucky if i remember my own number).

Call up his doctor and have him checked out. There probably is some kind of medical problem that you are unaware of.

  2. Seriously you need to address this with his doctor and sooner rather than later. Not to try and alarm you but there could be something serious going on.

When my son was 4 he would get sick all the time just daycare I thought and this went on for 8 months, 2 weeks before Christmas that year he was diagnosed with Cancer. The doctor said had it gone another 2-3 months he would have died. Needless to say, if a symptom continues for more than a few weeks I push on the doctors to find out why. This I recommend to everyone, our childs lives are too important to just sit back and hope it will go away on its own.

  3. ask a doctor

  4. I have to ask - important to whom?

I have a son who is quite similar. My honest advice to you, which you can take or leave, is to give up looking for a "diagnosis" - it won't help in any practical way. Look for solutions to the problems. If he can't remember things, get him a notebook - paper or electronic - or a maybe a cool kind of dogtag with address and phone number. Just let him eat what he likes, while challenging him to ensure that his diet is balanced.  As for the allergies, I can't help, I'm afraid.  I did hear on the radio about a program of de-sensitisation which apparently 'cures' people of allergies, but since we have no allergies in my family I was only listening with half an ear.

I hope this has helped a bit.
