Question:

My son caught a house gecko today, and he's afraid it's dying. He's heartbroken?

He got an aquarium for it, and spent all afternoon and evening on decking it out. He used my glue gun and made a little rock cave, and the works.

He hasn't been handling it or anything, and he's fed it.

It's easy to get another lizard, but what to do about his feelings?

  1. Make sure you get it in a warm area and spray its tank, to make it humid. Feed it crickets and make sure it has a little bowl of water. House Geckos love to climb around, add a twig and some leaves. Tell him the lizards probably past away of old age, its always possible. Hopefully it will be ok. Good Luck!

  2. reptiles are highly susceptible to stress. When you take it from being in the "wild" and put it in a small cage it is stressful. That being said if you were to buy a house gecko in a store odds are it was wild caught.

I would say release it and buy him a leopard gecko, african fat-tail, or a crested gecko. If releasing it is not an option, read this.

Why do you think your lizard is close to death?

For glue you need to have 100% PURE polyurethane. Anything else gives off toxic fumes, whether or not you can smell it. Don't use a hot glue gun anymore. Try to take the cave apart and redo it with polyurethane.

  3. My heart goes out to you...My daughter years ago lost a hamster.  We had two , she was eight, unknown to me one night she put a loose leaf binder in the middle of one cage and brought the older hamster in one one side.  Needless to say she woke up to sounds of crying.  The older hamster managed to lift the binder and killed the other younger hamster.  It wasso sad  as she cried so much.  I just told her it wasn't her fault...and held her, loved her and kissed the tears away....we never bought another one!

Wish I could help but I share in your torture!  God bless!  I will say a prayer for the innocence of your little one...to have peace!

What else can you do but cry with them  and

  4. why catch a wild happy lizard and put it in a cage let it go for the animals sak

  5. you need to let it go, and take him to a pet store and let him pick out a small lizard. and they have little caves and hide spots for him. i recommend against a heat rock though.. they get too hot in some areas, it'll burn them. under the tank heat or a heat lamp overhead works.

  6. Do you have one side of the aquarium heated? Water bowl on the other side? A place where the gecko can hide? Crickets and mealworms?

  7. now be a bit careful some aren't really as healthy as they look. probably something you could fell guilt about but find another gecko like it and replace it fast he may not notice. Or sit down and have a nice talk about the ways of life fro some animals and why it died. But its not dead yet it may be not so hurtful if you release it back into the wild. Now I own a gecko leopard when I first got him it was during the day and he was sleeping til he had to be put in a box then brought home and he sort of just acted like his new tank was a bit scary after a while he got used to it and was full of life. Best of luck.

  8. he needs to let the lizard go or else it probably will die.  he can go to the store and get another lizard.  just tell him that it is an outside lizard and that is where it needs to be.  just explain to him that the lizard has lived outside all of his life that the animal wouldn't know how to adapt to living in a cage.  i know it won't be easy for him but it will be a chance for him to learn something about animals.
