My son does not qualify for pre kindergarten and I do not make enough money to send him to a preschool.?

I am a single mother and I do not qualify to send my son to pre-k in the state of Texas, however I cannot afford to send him to a preschool...Most preschools are $150.00 per week. What can I do? Are there programs out there for my son? Besides at home I want him to start some kind of academic curriculum.

well it all depends on the age of your child... public assistance should be able to help you find a program. or you can search online for a reasonable program for your child... good luck!

How old is your child?  If he is between 3 and 5 he may qualify for Head Start.  Apply, even if you don't think you are income qualified because Head Start sometimes accepts over-income families for a variety of reasons.  If he is 4 and your school district is offering pre-k, the only qualifying factor should be age.  Is it day care you are in need of?  Maybe you qualify for subsidized day care.  Check with your local social service agency.  Your child's doctor's office should be able to direct you to the appropriate agency.  Call elementary schools, churches and social service agencies for a list of programs in your area.  Someone should be able to direct you to something age appropriate and may be able to help you obtain financial assistance.

wow I found one for my son thats 215 a month 3 days a week. Look for just preschool not daycare/preschools combined... Those cost more. I searched for my son to find a cheaper one and its a really good one.

yes there is a federal program that is called title 20. All states have this and is designed for family's that make under 35 k.

That is with both parents working at least 30 hours per week.

In the blue pages of your phone book you will see a listing for school readiness, they will be able to give you allot more info.

Are you a stay at home mom?  You might consider teaching him...you would have the best insight as to his abilities and challenges and he would get lots of one-on-one stuff.

There are a ton of homeshool families in TX which could provide moral, social, and extracurricular activities for you and your son.  It depends on your location but you could contact Texas Homeschool Coalition for support groups in your area and activities for the academic support.

See if there is a vocational high school nearby with a course in early childhood education. They sometimes have model programs. Also, check more traditional nursery schools. They are usually far less expensive since they are half day and not necessarily 5 days a week. The least expensive are cooperative nursery schools where parents are expected to help out. My granddaughter went to one. It was a great experience.

You can teach him everything he needs to know academically. I would try to find ways to help him socialize with kids his age. Do you have play groups? (In our area we have Family Infant preschool program) they have play groups but the parents are there. What about Sunday school? church groups? What about mothers morning out programs?

Talk to the kindergarten where he will go and find out what he should be learning and what he needs to know by the time he starts kindergarten. You can teach him all that at home.

Well i guess it would help to know why you dont qualify to send your sonto pre school.  Perhaps you should look into a voucher system for pre school assistance.  I am in the state of Arkansas and here we have vouchers that you can apply for through your local DHS office.  Also try head start programs as well as some other forms of free or reduced childcare.  I know that here in the state of Arkansas we have ABC which is a state funded pre school program that takes children from 3 to 5 who are eligible for free pre school.  So perhaps Texas has a similair program you might want to check with your local DHS office or with some of the pre schools in your area.

You may also consider not actually teaching you child anything using conventional methods.  Try teaching him through experiences and trial and failure etc.  The best education is from trail and error and letting children get out there and SEE how things work not just talk about them.  Hope this helps.  Good luck

I am a Professional Nanny and I teach the children I watch from the ABC Home Preschool curriculum, the cost was $49.99 and I received 2 yr 3 yr and 4-6 yr curriculum. Where are you located in TX a friend of mine has a home daycare that she does curriculum with the children for $100 a week

Hey there I teach in Texas. I understand how you feel about the preschool. If you are pretty familiar with the internet, there are websites out there, like meetup.com and there may be a mommy meet up group in your area. Chances are they meet up once a week for play dates where the kids can interact. Plus, they might know or be able to find cheap or free things to do that can be teachable moments for your child. You are obviously a concerned parent and you would do a great job teaching him on your own. There are so many websites out there and programs you can buy for your computer! Good luck.

What exactly do you mean by qualify?  Is it the age?  There is supposed to be a nationwide Head Start program for families that have economic issues.  They help with the cost of preschool.  Check out your states VPK program or Head Start.  You should have some kind of Early Learning Coalition.
