  1. Firstly, there are 6 types of colors in Magic.

White (Has a "sun" symbol on the top right corner)

    Blue (Has a "waterdroplet" symbol)

    Black (Has a "skull" symbol)

    Red (Has a "flame" symbol)

    Green (Has a "tree" symbol)

Colorless (Has a grey circle with a number inside)

Also, they have corrosponding borders.  The outer borders will be black or white or silver.  The inside border will be one of the colors above.  This will signify what color they are.

There are also multicolored cards.  This can be a gold inside border or an inside border that is one color on one side and a different color on the other side.

Here are some examples of what the cards would look like.

The best place to get them (if you are only looking for specific colors) is to go to a local card shop.  Comic stores may have them too.  To just buy packs of cards, you can get them from Target (easiest place to find them if you don't have a card store around).

  2. well if your son is new to magic i would advise that he doesnt start with blue.

blue is the hardest color to learn and master.

and besides red/blue doesnt go well together its kinda like fire/water.

anyways you can get magic cards at most stores like target and wal-mart and stores like that.

  3. its one of the 5 primary color cards that make up a magic the gathering card deck. Try a good baseball card store first. Try wizards of the coast website.

  4. magic cards come in a variety of types, blue refers to cards that use "blue" or "island" mana.. blue cards have a blue border around them usually and in the upper right hand corner have 1 or more water drop looking symbols that refer to blue mana.

red cards correspond to the mana from mountain cards and has a swirly fire looking symbol in the upper right hand corner and a red border as well.

your son probably has a specific deck with just islands and mountains, therefore getting him green (forest) cards will do him no good because he doesn't keep forests in his card pile
