He is almost 15 months old. He started antibiotics last night around 8 after a trip to the ER for a high fever. Tomorrow we are supposed to be flying to AZ. The flight is almost 2 hours. Is it safe to go on this flight, or should I cancel? Thanks.

  1. The only person who should answer this for you should be his pediatrician..

  2. I would definitley ask your pediatrician. I would say a NO. Because, with pressure and infection behind his ear, you're risking his eardrums bursting under the much more intense pressure of an airplane than on land. It could be dangerous. I dont know the condition of your son, but you should DEFINITELY consult his doctor about this.

  3. What your doctor meant was if you think you can put up with a screaming baby on that flight to Az then go ahead.  Because with a double ear infection he already has pressure on his ear drums and being on board a plane is going to add even more.  If it were MY child...I wouldn't put him through that pain.

  4. I personally wouldn't do it, because of the increased pressure.  There's already fluid in his ears and I'd be afraid his eardrums would burst.  That's just what I would do with my son, if your ped has no opinion, then I guess it's up to you.

  5. Just my opinion, but I would NOT want to take a 15 month old on a plane while he/she has a double ear infection. I know antibiotics work quite well and quite fast, but yikes….I’d try to take a later flight or bump it a day if I could. But if you can’t, then you do what you have to do.

My son is the prince of ear infections and it seems he’s always on antibiotics. And typically, he’s pretty fussy the first few days waiting for antibiotics to kick in. But I give him a small dose of Tylenol while we wait for the other meds to kick in. It helps ease him and any pain he may be in or break his slight temp that comes with the infection.

It really is a personal call, but a scary one. Being on a plane with a happy 15 month old is scary, never mind your situation. With ear pressure and popping of the ears....I wish you the VERY best in whatever you decide….I hope the baby feels better soon!

  6. i would call the pediatrician and find out. i would not think there really would be a concern- but just make sure you have his medication as well as some tylenol to help with any pain...
