VMRC (Valley Mountain Regional Center) wants to exit my son from the EIBT autism program. But he is doing good. They said there is nothing I can do. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

  1. There is certainly something you can do! First, they must administer a reevaluation prior to exiting him. If he is still not meeting the standards that he should, INCLUDING his behaviors and social behaviors, he should not be exited. Since it is HIGHLY unlikely that his social behaviors warrant his being exited, this is simply not okay.

What you can do, if they try to exit him is to not sign the paperwork that agrees to this. If they want you to sign paperwork and are insistent about it, simply write DISAGREE where ever you have to on the paperwork, even if it is over other writing on the page, with your signature.

You can then go into the due process end of things via the booklet that they are to have provided you at least once a year.

  2. I am a special ed teacher from Missouri, and don't know what EIBT is, but in my state the only reason they can "exit" a student is because they are too low functioning and need to go another program that better meets their needs or because they are too violent. It sounds like your son is doing well and they probably want to let him move on to a higher program. Find out why exactly they want to do this. In our state( or at least my district Columbia Public Schools), parents would never be confused about ANY decision about their child. Look us up. Many people move here to Columbia, Mo for our programs for autisum both in the school district and we have lots of other programs for autistic kids here too....

  3. They can pretty much do whatever they want, but I would want a reason why they are exiting your son. Maybe they feel he is not serious enough and has proven to be able to thrive in a different environment. I would start asking questions. It seems strange they would just exit him without giving reason.
